Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949) was an Indian freedom fighter, poet, political activist and the first female Governor of India. She served as the first governor of the United Provinces, present-day Uttar Pradesh. She graduated from the University of Madras at the age of sixteen and had a fervour for writing poetry which she developed at the juvenile age of twelve. Her father loved her and was enthralled when he was shown her Persian play – Maher Muneer. Astounded by the beauty of that play, he showed it to everyone including the Nizam of Hyderabad – Mir Mahbub Ali Khan who was so pleased with the play that he gave young Sarojini an opportunity to study in England. There she initially studied at the King’s College London and later at Girton College, Cambridge, and returned to India when she was just nineteen.
