Uttarkashi which state

Uttarkashi is a town and district of the same name in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is a beautiful mountainous town which is famous for its tourist destination. The place offers a serene natural beauty which attracts many sightseers. The best season to visit the spiritual place is from October to March. It offers various touristic and pilgrimage sites.

Are Uttarkashi and Kashi the same?

Uttarkashi and Kashi are not the same places. Uttarkashi is a district and town of the state of Uttarakhand, whereas Kashi, also known as Varanasi, is the holy city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and it is also known as the spiritual capital of India. There are in total three Kashi, two in Uttarakhand which are Uttarkashi and Guptkashi, and one in Uttar Pradesh, which is also known as Varanasi.

Uttarkashi is famous for its scenic beauty and piney hills along with several ancient temples and spiritual places, as Uttarakhand is also known as Devbhoomi, “the place where God resides”. Other famous destinations include Dotilal Lake, Shakti Temple, Nachiketa Tal and the Nehru Mountaineering Institute. Gangotri, one of the famous Char Dham, is also situated in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, which is the origin of the sacred river Ganga.

While there are several temples in Uttarkashi which hold a significant place in Hindu mythology, one famous temple is the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Though the Kashi Vishwanath temple of Varanasi is more famous, Uttarkashi’s temple is equally important.

In the Hindu Mythology, it is believed that maa Durga, after killing Mahishasur, came to The Kashi Vishwanath Temple of Uttarkashi and there she took the form of a trident (Trishul). No one knows how deep that trishul goes in the ground. It is considered to be unshakeable by force or coercion, but even slightly brushed with a devoted, selfless and surrendered hand, it will start shaking. It is widely accepted that when the angry rishi Parshuram killed 21 rulers, he came to this temple and meditated for a very long duration to pacify his anger.

It is also known as Bhavishya Kashi, as it is conjectured that the Kashi of Varanasi will be flooded by the great flood, leaving nothing behind. It is then when lord Shiva will arrive and will make this temple his abode.

Is Uttarkashi a Jyotirlinga?

No, Uttarkashi is not one of the twelve jyotirlingas. Though Uttarkashi is a sacred place with plenty of holy sites, it is also the origin of the Ganga River from the Gangotri Glacier and is the location of the revered ancient temple of Kashi Vishwanath.

Uttarkshi temple 2250 years old

Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the most famous temples of Uttarkashi; while it is considered to be an ancient temple, its age is not determined. It is certainly not 2250 years old. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered to be an important pilgrimage stop in the Char Dham Yatra.
